FAQs & Resources

A Professional Employer Organization (PEO) enables small and mid-sized businesses to cost-effectively outsource the management of human resources, employee benefits, payroll and workers’ compensation while focusing on their core competencies to run their business and grow the bottom line.

Businesses today, especially smaller ones, need help managing increasingly complex employee-related matters such as health benefits, workers’ compensation claims, payroll, payroll tax compliance and unemployment insurance claims. Sometimes, it doesn’t make sense to house a full team of experts internally. That’s where a PEO comes in!

A PEO provides services to effectively manage critical human resource responsibilities and employer risks for clients. This includes but is not limited to:

  • Payroll and payroll tax processing
  • Benefits shopping, open enrollment, and administration
  • Workers' compensation
  • Risk & safety programs
  • Employment law compliance
  • Employee relations guidance

There are many benefits to partnering with a PEO.

Here are the top ones:

  • Estimated 27.2% annual return on investment
  • Annual median growth for PEO clients is 40% greater, compared to non-PEO firms
  • HR administrative tasks are taken off your plate, so you can focus more on your bottom line
  • Access best-in-class HR technology that creates efficient and effective people processes
  • Fortune 500-level benefit offerings at an affordable rate, helping to attract and retain A-players
  • Compliance expert guidance to eliminate fines and give peace of mind

There are many reasons why a business may need a PEO.

Some examples include:

  • Need to hire and ramp up quickly
  • Want to expand geographically
  • Need help attracting better talent
  • Experiencing high employee turnover
  • Desire a robust benefits package
  • The current HR leader has too much administrative work and cannot focus on HR strategy
  • Payroll and HR tasks are sucking up too much of their time
  • Too many HR vendors to manage (want one bill, one partner)
  • No qualified HR professionals on staff
  • Need help establishing policies and ensuring they are enforced for compliance
  • Don’t have efficient (or any) HR processes in place

MENTALITY: Tandem HR loves to partner with growing companies that are invested in their employees and truly desire a best place to work.

SIZE: We target companies with 10-250 employees. While there are exceptions, it should be noted that an employer must have 5 employees who enroll in benefits in order to take advantage of our master policies. We do service larger clients depending on their HR needs. Some of our clients have thousands of worksite employees.

INDUSTRY: As a co-employer, we want to minimize risk. Therefore, we aim to partner with companies in white collar industries (think office jobs) or light manufacturers. We avoid those with high risk such as construction companies or those with a lot of part-time, seasonal workers with high turnover such as restaurants.

LOCATION: Tandem HR offers BlueCross and BlueShield of Illinois, BlueCross and BlueShield of Texas, Quartz (Wisconsin), and Aetna. A majority of our clients are headquartered in Illinois and Wisconsin. However, we are able to service businesses with employees in any state but Hawaii.

1. Our clients know what they're paying.

Other PEOs charge based on the client's employee's payroll. The downside is that each time a business wants to increase an employee's pay through promotion, as an example, the client also ends up having to pay their PEO more. With Tandem HR, our administrative fee depends on employee size. We also show the client the pricing for each product, again showing them precisely what they're paying.

2. We offer BlueCross and BlueShield of Illinois (BCBSIL) and BlueCross and BlueShield of Texas (BCBSTX) master medical plan.

Only two PEOs can say that they offer BCBSIL to their clients. Tandem HR is one. BCBSIL is the most attractive medical plan in Illinois due to its expansive provider network. BCBSTX is the most attractive medical plan in Texas.

3. We're not a 1-800 number.

Although we're the largest privately-held PEO in the Midwest, we're small enough to deliver a personal touch. Each client develops a relationship with an assigned HR Business Partner with their direct contact information. They are a true extension of the client’s staff. In many cases, our client service team members are invited to our client's work celebrations and internal parties. Our goal is to be accessible and provide exceptional and high-touch client service.

4. We're ESAC and IRS certified.

The International Revenue Services (IRS) recognizes Tandem HR as a Certified Professional Employer Organization (CPEO). In addition, we're Employer Services Assurance Corporation (ESAC) certified. Our certification protects our clients and their fiduciaries.

You know your connections best, so starting a conversation begins with however you're most comfortable. However, we've provided an example to help form the conversation:
