Today I’m going to talk about 5 HR topics that I believe will be HOT in 2018.
#1 – Harassment
I have a separate vlog on this issue, but the general idea is to make sure you have a policy and processes in place for individuals to bring forward complaints. Also, have procedures in place to investigate those allegations.
#2 – Laws differing by state
If you have a business that is in multiple states, ensure you know what those laws are and how they differ. There are a lot of different laws enacted at the state level.
For example, leave laws and paid time off for individuals to care for ailing family members is something we see a lot of at the state level. Most recently, New York instituted a new leave law to take effect on January 1, 2018.
Salary bands are also gaining popularity. They prevent employers from asking a specific salary of a potential candidate for a prior job. This will become a popular trend as we try and eliminate the pay inequity in the workforce today.
There has been hot debate popping up all over the place about ‘ban the box’. There are those that want to ban ‘ban the box’ and others for it. ‘Ban the box’ is a movement asking lawmakers to prevent employers from asking a job applicant whether he or she has any criminal history before receiving an interview or job offer.
#3 Workplace violence
Make sure your employees know what to do in there is an active shooter in the workplace. Think through a solution that will keep your employees safe.
Employers want to attract and retain top talent, and it is a competitive market right now. Make sure you have a strategy in place that focuses on precisely what you are looking for in your employees and what you can offer those that work for you. What is unique about your organization and sets you apart from your competitors?
#5 Drug testing and substance abuse
We are seeing more and more states legalizing medical or recreational marijuana. How does that come in to play in your workplace? Set drug free workplace policies and know what you can do
